{"id":979,"date":"2026-05-09T13:06:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T13:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedailyleaf.live\/?p=979"},"modified":"2026-05-09T13:06:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T13:06:39","slug":"two-britons-evacuated-from-hantavirus-hit-ship-improving-in-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedailyleaf.live\/index.php\/2026\/05\/09\/two-britons-evacuated-from-hantavirus-hit-ship-improving-in-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Britons evacuated from hantavirus-hit ship \u2018improving\u2019 in hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Man, 69, is in intensive care in Johannesburg, while expedition guide Martin Anstee, 56, receiving care in Netherlands<br>Two&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/07\/two-britons-self-isolating-in-uk-after-returning-hantavirus-ship\">Britons<\/a>&nbsp;who were medically evacuated from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/07\/where-cruise-ship-hantavirus-from-what-next-canary-islands\">hantavirus<\/a>-hit cruise ship are improving, global health officials have said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A British passenger, understood to be a 69-year-old man, was taken to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/southafrica\">South Africa<\/a>&nbsp;on 27 April and is receiving care at a private health facility in Sandton, Johannesburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another Briton, Martin Anstee, 56, an expedition guide, was taken off the MV Hondius on Wednesday and flown to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/netherlands\">Netherlands<\/a>&nbsp;to receive specialist medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/world-health-organization\">World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0(WHO), said two patients \u2013 known to include a Briton \u2013 remained in hospital in the Netherlands and another Briton was in intensive care in South Africa.<br><br>She told a WHO press briefing: \u201cI am very happy to say the patient in South&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/africa\">Africa<\/a>&nbsp;is doing better, and the two patients in the Netherlands we hear are stable.
